Subak, World Heritage Irrigation System by UNESCO in Bali. So Beautiful!


The young generation of today are likely to struggle with a variety of the latest technology may rarely know and understand about Subak or irrigation. That's why there needs to be an effort to preserve the technology and local culture, especially if it is beneficial to promote the local economy. It seems that is the objective of the establishment in Bali Subak Museum which was inaugurated in 1981 by the Governor of Bali in that era, Ida Bagus Mantra.


Subak is a distribution management system flow agricultural irrigation typical Balinese society. This system has been known since hundreds of years ago and proved to increase agricultural productivity Balinese. Through Subak system, farmers get water rations in accordance with decisions made in the deliberation of citizens.



Philosophically, the existence of Subak is an implementation of the concept of "Tri Hita Karana", which when interpreted are three causes of happiness (God, man and nature). Tri Hita Karana is the concept of a harmonious relationship between man and God, man and nature, and between humans. So in other words, the activities in the Subak not always about agriculture, but also includes social interaction between residents and religious rituals for success in farming.

When we pursue history, this museum was conceived by an expert and religious customs are so honored and respected by the community named I Gusti Ketut Kaler. The reason he initiated the establishment of Subak Museum is that of cultural heritage since the 11th century is still preserved. Finally his hard effort was realized with named Heritage Museum Subak.


Subak Museum is the only museum that explores the agricultural affairs in Bali. In this museum exhibited Subak miniature complete with pictures of the manufacturing process, such as the stage of finding the fountain, the process of making water tunnels, dams, and canals connecting to use water to the rice fields of the population. Subak Museum also has a visual audio data on rice cultivation process from deliberation members Subak, water management agreement, to religious rituals to invoke the success of the harvest.
The museum consists of open and closed buildings. The building consists of a closed museum exhibition booth displays objects related to the work of farmers as well as audio-visual that shows activities in addressing Subak irrigation management. Meanwhile, the building is a museum open visualization of depiction Subak in miniature form. The miniature consists of a pool as a relocation site irrigation, a channel to drain the water from the pool to the relocation of water. Objects or equipment farmers are also on display in the exhibition building, of which the means of agricultural activities.

Besides miniature traditional kitchen equipped with spatial and furniture to cook rice. Visitors can also add knowledge or insight about agriculture by visiting the library facilities. The library collection is quite complete, ranging from cross-disciplinary studies on Subak system to agricultural issues in general.

Subak Museum had been duly preserved because it saves a lot of cultural assets are truly priceless. Therefore, it is natural also if the existence and the existence of the museum is maintained and preserved with all the ability in order to not become extinct because it could be said that this museum is a representation of Balinese farming systems.
It is important to note that the specificity of Subak is a ritual activity and that is what distinguishes it from other irrigation systems in Indonesia and the world. Subak which is an autonomous organization that manages the irrigation area or particular paddy, get irrigation water from a particular source, and is responsible for the subak temple. Subak Museum is located in the village of Sanggulan, Tabanan which is about 20 kilometers west of the city of Denpasar. This museum is very strategic location and proximity to other tourist spots in the region. You can visit the Subak Museum every day except Sunday. The museum is open from 07:30 to 18:30.
